Belém

The state of Pará is the gateway of the Amazon region and where the Amazon river flows out into the Atlantic ocean. This state is closely linked to our indian heritage being it in its cuisine. the many products made from natural raw material such as roots. leaves and animal oil; handicraft of woven baskets. decorated gourds and the unique pre-historic ceramic that are reproduced for sale.
Belém. 150km from the Amazon river delta in the Guajará bay and capital of Pará state was a very important city in the late 19th century. being it the leading exporters of rubber.
This city lost its importance when the rubber boom dwindled but it has retained till today the many beautiful buildings of yesteryear. Belém streets are lined with mango trees and one of the points that distinguishes Belém from other cities is its afternoon rain. a daily ritual that has set a city custom ­ appointments for either before or after the rain.
Belém highlights:
Cathedral - build in 1617 with painting by Italian painter Domenico de Angelis;
Ver-o-Peso (see-the-weight) two markets. lodged under and English iron structure build by the Guajará bay at the old town. housing all types of commerce from wholesalers to vegetables;
Teatro da Paz - theater. a neo-classical monument build in 1868 with seating capacity for 1.100;

Visit to the whole complex of the Emilio Goeldi Museum including a visit to the botanical garden. the zoo. the aquarium and the exhibit "The Man and the Environment" (exhibition of anthropology. geology. Botany and zoology research).

H/D Icoaraci Village Tour Duration: 3 hrs. Icoaraci 18km from Belém is well known for its great influence of the Marajoara tribe from Marajó Island. The Marajoara tribe that existed in the area 20.000 years ago. This civilization has left a rich and beautiful heritage of ceramic handicrafts and inhabitants today manufacture copies of the vases and utensils that are available and can be exported to any place in the world. H/D EMBRAPA Technical Visit Duration: 3 hrs. Tour will visit EMBRAPA a government agency that gives technical assistance to agriculture. developing species that are resistant to the region's acid soil. In the EMBRAPA research center one will see the adaptations that are developed in palm trees. tropical fruit. Brazil nut trees. black pepper. Another area centers its research on water buffaloes.

F/D River Cruise with Lunch Duration: 6:30 hrs. A full day tour exploring the mouth of the Gumará and Acará rivers and their tributaries. Boat will take one to the depths of the creeks and streams and accompanied by an expert guide one will experience life in the forest. the flora and fauna. Tour will ride for 80km and after passing the 1.5km long Sebastião de Oliveira bridge will reach Mosqueiro. On the north side of the island one will enjoy a panoramic view of the Marajó bay.
